What’s the Best Way to Reduce the Environmental Impact of Disposable Razors? Recycle Them!

As a response to shavers’ new interest in reducing their environmental footprint, major shaving brands have announced their commitments to new sustainability efforts. They have also launched new eco-friendly product lines, with high post-consumer recycled content, such as Gillette’s Planet KIND and Schick’s Xtreme 3 Eco.

But with the Environmental Protection Agency once estimating that more than 2 billion razors and cartridges end up in landfills each year, eco-conscious shavers might want to do more to cut down on this waste. That’s where recycling comes in.

Since disposable and cartridge razors and blades are comprised of a mix of materials—including several types of plastics as well as metal components, they cannot be recycled in curbside bins. So razor brands have taken action to help their customers recycle their razors and blades.

Gillette has partnered with recycling company TerraCycle to help consumers recycle their razors, blades, and packaging, while other brands, such as Schick’s parent company Edgewell, have their own recycling programs.

The TerraCycle program, the first of its kind, collects all brands of razors, blades, and their plastic packaging, breaks them down, and separates them by material. They then clean and melt the plastics, preparing them to be recycled into new products like picnic tables and park benches. The metal components are sent to be smelted and converted into new alloys.

This partnership between Gillette and TerraCycle means that instead of ending up in landfills, cartridge and disposable razors and packaging will take on a new life as useful, usable products.

2+ Billion

The EPA estimates more than 2 billion - that's billion with a B! - razors and cartridges end up in US landfills every year.

TerraCycle® and Gillette® partnered to create a first-of-its-kind recycling program for blades, razors, and plastic packaging - of any and all brands.
